Day 20

30 Day Challenge - Day 20

Drink Offering

Yesterday’s post discussed the significance of showbread as it relates to communion. The Table of the Bread of Presence also held pitchers of wine used for drink offerings.

According to Exodus‬ ‭29:39-41, ‬ every morning and every evening a lamb was sacrificed, offered to God, with bread (grain offering) and wine (drink offering).

Drink offering literally means “that which is poured out”. It differed slightly from other offerings because it represented the fruit of man’s labor. It was received by God as a man pouring out all of one’s-self to God.

Remember it was poured out on top of the animal (blood) and bread.

The first drink offering is in Genesis 35:9-10,14

“Then God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Padan Aram, and blessed him.

And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; your name shall not be called Jacob anymore, but Israel shall be your name.” So He called his name Israel.

So Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He talked with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it.”

God appeared to Jacob “once again”, or in a new way. Then God blessed him and changed his name (prophesied identity).

Jacob set up an altar and poured a drink offering of wine over it.

Jacob marked the place and time that he encountered The Angel of the Lord (Jesus) and his life was forever changed. You might say that he poured out all of who he used to be on the altar.

With his drink offering Jacob was declaring “Common union” or communion with God.

It isn’t that our offering earns us salvation or extra status with God. But as we pour ourselves out for Him, we are showing our desire for a deep, intimate relationship with Him.

As you receive communion, pray: Today I offer myself as a drink offering poured out for you. Teach me, lead me in the process of choosing daily to pour myself out.‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬
