Don’t You Remember
When I was in 4th grade, we moved into a new apartment and I began my third school for the year. From this apartment I rode the bus to school, which was also new for me. You can imagine it was a bit stressful for a 9-year-old.
One of the first days, I climbed off the bus and up the stairs to our front door to find it locked. I went back to the bus stop to see if my mom was waiting in the car nearby. I went back to try the door again. Worry set in. I walked up and down the block several times.
Finally, with tears starting to trickle, I knocked on the door of our downstairs neighbors, who were friends of ours. I was looking for comfort and hope. She kindly hugged me and said, “I’ve been waiting for you.” Seeing I had been crying, she said “Did you not remember you will be with us until your mom gets off work today?”
My mom had made a good plan for me to be taken care of. My lack of maturity and focus on so many other things kept me from remembering the plan.
Our friend was patient but often, we get frustrated with other people who don’t follow our stated plans. Do you ever just want to say to them “Did you not remember?!”
Jesus had it happen with the disciples in Mark 8:17,18
“But Jesus, … said to them, “Why do you reason…? Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart still hardened?
“Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember?“ NKJV
Paul said this to the church in Thessalonika when they were asking him questions, apparently more than once.
“Don’t you remember that when I was with you I went over all these things?“ 2 Thessalonians 2:5 TPT
It’s human nature to not remember something very long. There can be a lot of factors. Maybe we just chose not to hear it. Maybe we don’t fully understand or are distracted. Maybe what we expected and what see just don’t connect.
I’m sure this last reason rang true for the women who went to Jesus’ tomb with embalming spices. Angels said to the women at the tomb:
“ … Why would you look for the Living One in a tomb? He is not here, for he has risen!“
”Have you forgotten what he said to you while he was still in Galilee:“ Luke 24:5, 6 TPT
”All at once they remembered his words.“ Luke 24:8 TPT
The women needed comfort and hope. They needed direction and to know they would be ok. When they remembered Jesus’ words, everything became much clearer. Suddenly they had hope and their next step in front of them.
No matter what you need, remember what His word says regarding your need. If you need hope, peace, purpose, healing, comfort, provision or anything else, remember what He has said about your need – both in the Bible and specifically to your heart.
Remember what you have read and heard. Remember what you have seen him do in and around you. Remember what was provided for you on the cross.
My heart was stilled by remembering my mom’s words. The women at the tomb found renewed hope and purpose remembering Jesus’ words.
Today let your heart soar on the words Jesus said to the disciples just days before the discovery of the empty tomb.
“Then he lifted up a loaf, and after praying a prayer of thanksgiving to God, he gave each of his apostles a piece of bread, saying, “This loaf is my body, which is now being offered to you. Always eat it to remember me.” After supper was over, he lifted the cup again and said, “This cup is my blood of the new covenant I make with you, and it will be poured out soon for all of you.” Luke 22:19-20 TPT
Receive communion to remember what God has said to you.
